What’s On My Nightstand (And Why It’s Changing Everything)
Lately, I’ve been thinking about how a small change can create such a ripple effect in our lives. Like, why did I wait so long to try this? kind of change.
I used to be so attached to my morning routine—get up, pour the coffee, scroll the news, eat some breakfast, and start the day. But I was constantly forgetting to take my thyroid meds. And if you know, you know: you can’t eat or drink for at least 30 minutes after taking them. So I’d either forget entirely, or take them and then get grumpy waiting for that first glorious sip of coffee. Not exactly the peaceful start I was hoping for.
So I made a tiny little switch.
Now, my Bible and my daily motivation/devotional book are on my nightstand. And so is my medication. I take my pill literally as soon as I wake up. Then instead of rushing to the kitchen, I stay snuggled under the covers and use that time to be with Jesus. I read scripture, reflect, and center my heart before the day even begins.
It’s such a win-win-win.
✔️ I remember to take my meds.
✔️ I get a slow, peaceful start to the morning.
✔️ My time with God becomes the first thing on my agenda—not the “if I get to it” thing.
✔️ And bonus—I'm not starting my day with headlines and chaos. Just truth, grace, and quiet.
Poppy often hops up to join me—she’s basically the coziest Bible study buddy ever. And Erik, without fail, has my coffee waiting in the kitchen when I finally emerge. It’s become this simple, sacred rhythm, and it just feels right.
It reminds me of Lamentations 3:22–23:
“The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.”
Isn’t that beautiful? Every morning is a fresh start—with new mercies, new opportunities, and even new routines.
This small shift made me realize how often we cling to the way we’ve always done things—in our homes, in how we parent, how we run our businesses—and we miss the beauty of a fresh perspective. Sometimes, all it takes is a tiny tweak to change everything for the better.
So if something’s not working, maybe give yourself permission to try something new. You never know—you might just stumble on your own little morning miracle.
